City of Mysts, Chapter 41

A Hidden Message

They were in an abandoned building. Fred was looking through the Oracle’s eyes as a figure in a tattered black cloak appeared from the shadows. The hood covered most of his face but for the wild silver eyes. “I didn’t think you’d come,” his voice sounded weak and scratchy like he hadn’t spoken for a long time.

“Can’t I be left in peace even before I die?” the Oracle muttered. “Or are you here to finish the job?” He turned his back to the man. “Make it quick.”

“I’m not here for that.”

“Don’t lose your nerve now. How many have you killed since that day anyway? Hundreds? Thousands? I’ve lost count. You’re always on the news that I stopped keeping tabs. What do they call you nowadays? God? Demon?” He tapped on his chin. “Ah. Hunter. He who holds the world in darkness and preys on the innocent,” the Oracle sneered. (more…)

Man From the Future

White searing pain lanced behind his eyes. Fred lost his balance and fell from the bed. On reflex, he stuck his arm out to break the fall. Agony shot up his hand to his forearm as he hit the floor. The arm gave out under his weight.

Stunned and hurting, Fred lay curled on the cold floor cradling a sprained wrist. His other hand pressed on his temple, he waited for the headache to subside. Underneath the throbbing pain of his injured arm, a current coursed through it toward the tender spot. He gritted his teeth in anticipation. For several moments, he endured the burning sensation of the accelerated healing in his wrist.

Amid the haze of pain, he felt hands clasp around his shoulders. Gently. he was propped to a sitting position.

“What did you do to me?” he grounded out, glaring at the blind man crouched in front of him. (more…)

Abducted

Behind the curtain of one window, the doctor spied the man in the dark suit. Louis’ personal bodyguard stood out in front of James’ brightly painted house. Allan’s back was ramrod straight as he waited for Louis’ friends to settle personal matter prior to their departure.

Fred could hear hushed voices in the adjacent room. The couple had been closeted in there for a while. He decided to join Allan outside. Upon closer inspection, the bodyguard was tense…and unhappy. “I thought Louis would be with you.”

“He convinced me to leave him at the mansion,” Allan said at length. “Louis can be very persuasive – a family trait most Roucans share, I believe.”
